AURIL recognises 8 activities for members’ professional development.

A personal development plan (PDP) is useful for providing evidence of your professional development activities for annual appraisals, as well as encouraging line manager support for your career aspirations. Although outcome is more important than hours spent, members normally spend around 100 hours per annum updating and broadening their knowledge and skills through:

1.  Events: Attending AURIL and others' conferences, seminars, meetings and networks to expand Knowledge Exchange (KE), discipline and sector knowledge and skills, keep up to date on policies, trends and developments and to share best practice and experiences with colleagues, partners and influencers.

2.  Private Study: Keeping up to date on KE, sector, organisational, discipline trends and emerging technologies; undertaking research to develop relevant new KE skills and/or improve performance and knowledge; broadening KE understanding through online or other related networks such as http://gin.cloud9network.com, newsletters, best practice guides, networks, publications and interactive discussion fora.

3.  Short Training Courses & Workshops: Attending non-award bearing KE-relevant courses and subject-specific workshops or one-off award-bearing KE-relevant course modules to improve knowledge and skills.

4.  Qualification Studies: Studying for academic or vocational KE-relevant skills and competencies through credit bearing courses.

5.  The Development of the profession: Contributing to KE progress and understanding through participative development projects such as collating "best practice" case studies or designing new national or international policy, processes and guidelines; undertaking personal in-house projects or internal consultancies.

6.  Imparting Knowledge to Others: Presenting regionally, nationally or internationally on KE issues; publishing books, papers, journal or online articles or blogs on KE matters.

7.  Mentoring/Coaching of Others: Acting as a mentor or coach for less experienced colleagues or teaching part-time as a non-academic on KE matters.

8.  Contributing to the Community: Contributing to job-related committees outside your own organisation or undertaking voluntary or charity work related to your role.
